How to Elevate Your Substack Posts with Audio
It’s fun and easy and adds another dimension to your writing
I’ve always liked trying new things in my writing and audio is one of my favorite ways to add a little something extra to my posts.
After starting a blog on Substack, I was delighted to find out how easy it is to add audio to my posts using their built in recording tools.
All you need is a headset or mic and your voice to create audio to pump up the volume on your post.
Take a listen to the audio I created in Substack to tell you all about how it works and why it’s a good idea to give it a try.
So now that I’ve got you excited about the possibilities, here’s how you do it.
#1. Open a new post in Substack and click on the headphones icon in the top menu.
You’ll see two options: Voiceover and Audio Embed. Choose Voiceover if you want to create an audio file you can download later like I did for this story. Or you can just choose Audio embed to add the file to your post.
#2. Now make sure your headset or mic is set for your sound input on your computer and click on the red Create audio button when you’re ready to record. When you’re finished recording just click the button again to stop.
#3. Substack will then process your recording and you can click the Done button to insert the audio into your post.
#4. Once your audio is embedded you can Edit, Download, or Delete it and start over.
Recording Tips:
If you haven’t recorded anything before, do a couple of test recordings to get comfortable with the process.
Don’t get too hung up on being perfect, just talk naturally as if you were talking to a friend.
Keep your recording short, about 2–4 minutes is a good length to start with.
Recording Ideas.
You can record:
An intro or a quote for your post.
A summary of your post like the one I did.
Some tips and insights.
Poetry
Some quick tips
Meditations or visualizations.
Remember to just have fun with it and experiment.
Takeaway: Creating audio content can add a deeper dimension to your writing and help you connect with your audience through your voice.

Thank you for this! I can’t figure out how to embed my audio so that it shows up in the top right (on the phone) as an active play button. Most posts have this and I’ve tried everything to no avail; including searches for the information. Any ideas? Thank you!!!
